Large privately owned island in the Dry Fork river. To the S ca. 30 m is an oxbow with Carex torta. Upslope is a hemlock - yellow birch - tulip poplar / great laurel forest growing on a steep N slope. To the S ca. 20 m is the Dry Fork River. Much of the island is forested w/ successional yellow poplar with a thin patch of "oak" - hickory dominance only lacking the oak for much of the stand. There is also a thin patch of hemlock - yellow birch on the island along the back channel towards the upstream end of the island. See TUCK.31 for more context.;Floodplain forest growing on the downstream end of a large river island. The island is roughly 3 m above the current river level. The forest likely only floods during major events. The forest floor shows signs of fluviation but no sign of recent flotsom. The plot is actually sloped upstream. The forest floor is densely covered with Thelypteris noveboracensis. The overstory is Quercus rubra - Carya spp. / Fagus grandifolia - Betula lenta.
Representativeness
Small patch of floodplain forest with dominance by red oak and American beech. Plot was place to maximize cover by the red oak and beech and to minimize the cover by yellow poplar. Similar community has been sampled along the Shavers Fork River.
